HEADCANON TOWN
TRISH UNA, AS PRESENTED TO YOU BY PONCH
Let's start from the top! I've seen some fun headcanons of Trish's full name being things like Patrizia and shit, but I'm in the camp of...Trish is her name-name! Donatella just thought it sounded cute, you know? It's simple, it's feminine, and probably unique in a place like Italy, and y'all know how parents are about making sure their kid has a Unique name. She'd be absolutely guilty of this shit.
As for Trish's age, I do not perceive her conflicting birthdays nor how fuckored her official canon one is timeline wise. I just say, yeah it's June 5, 1985 sure sure let's ignore that that's when her parents met ANYWAYS!
I mentioned on plurk that I dunno what her orientation is so that will not come up here! Hopefully I'll find the answer in RP.
Anyways, let's touch on childhood! Trish is born in Ischia, Campania specifically Lacco Ameno, the home of Il Fungo! This was almost a joke but when I thought more on it...having Donatella hail from a small town would do a lot to explain some things. Like, why she had no one else to reach out to before her death besides a man she hadn't seen in fifteen fucking years. I waffle between Donatella being born there herself versus moving there to start over as it were. I don't want to make her life oh, tragedy after tragedy! So I lean towards her already living there and the rest of her family is scattered across Italy and they didn't get along and no longer talk because of personality clashes? Which, judging by the stuff I read on the daily from personal anecdotes across the web, happens, uh, quite a lot. I like to think Donatella is simply A Lot herself. Also, for someone her age to vacation to Sardinia when she did sure sounds easy when you realize Sardinia is not...far from Lacco Ameno at all? Less than a day, maybe 300 American dollars? IT'S LITERALLY A STRAIGHT LINE IF YOU GO BY BOAT? That's definitely affordable! I mean, if I'm going with the angle she was already living alone, then the affordable part is especially pertinent haha.
As for Donatella herself, I picture her as someone who didn't know what she wanted other than to live big and live loud and she had already planned out her life. Gonna be a fashion designer, have her stuff admired by hundreds, possibly thousands of people, live comfortably, and get a cute as fuck husband. She does not get all of these things, of course, because the one man she falls for ghosts her insanely hard, which okay, alright, fine. But then she's like ah shit, pregante. This is of course life-changing! She probably laid on her couch and cried about it for a solid day! But then it's like hey you know what...I get to have a cute kid I can dress ADORABLY and people will BASK in their presence. So she quickly comes around to the idea, and enjoys the attention and questions and planning. There's so much planning! Excuses to go shopping!
In this vein I simply picture it as someone lonely excited to have...somebody there! Even if they're very tiny, and can't talk for awhile, it's so different to being alone. I picture Trish learning to talk very fast and very well because Donatella talks to her from day zero until the day she dies just...constantly.
I JUST think a lot about the photos from Trish's ransacked apartment because it's very...deliberate in how all we see are the two of them in these photos. It gives me the impression Trish and her mom were basically each other's best friend in a sense. I don't imagine a single mom had much time for a social life and Donatella simply took Trish everywhere with her. But she was happy to because look at how cute her daughter is? Trish definitely got dressed up in cute clothes on the daily. When she was old enough she'd pose for her mom and send Donatella to the floor laughing. Especially because I imagine baby Trish is not remotely shy. She probably poses on purpose when she sees cameras pointed even vaguely in her direction.
These two...had a lot of fun! Trish is very spirited though and this is true forever. She and her mom definitely butted heads but I don't believe they'd have had devastating fights. Probably really stupid ones actually, but I don't think either of them are the type to hold grudges over small things especially. I picture the worst fights being when Trish gets more reclusive and private as she grew into a teenager because of course, and you know how some parents get really clingy when that happens? Oh, god. It was awful, just thinking about it has me covering mine ears.
But I'm in the group of people that believes Donatella dearly loved her daughter, especially because I like drawing contrast and man, there are so many shitty parents in Vento, there had to be someone besides Mela Ghirga and Bruno's Parents that were decent!! And Donatella is basically my pillar for "most normal parent" because obviously, considering what happened to Bruno and his family was both a normal part of life that also got fucked up real fast LMAO.
I also firmly believe this because a lot of my Trish headcanon hinges on her being deeply influenced by the biggest figure in her life before the events of Vento Aureo! Do you hear me, Araki!!!! And Trish is a normal girl before shit goes down, so I put her in the most stable household I can picture.
Anyways, so. Trish grows up with a single parent, so she picks up a lot of her mom's taste in things. I tend to center Trish's favorites around American music and movies because I am American but also my own mom lived in Europe in the 80s while she was in the military, and it fascinated me as a little kid to think about my mom listening to her favorite tunes playing in German bars and shit because they also loved Tears for Fears LMAO. This and Araki putting Gwyneth Paltrow as one of her favorite actors along with Marcello Mastroianni had me consider how the world at the time was sort of tossing things into the wider international arena and had been for some time. Mastroianni also has a long ass career starting in the 50s, so Donatella would doubtlessly have grown up with his films and it's only natural Trish would have as well considering it extended into the 1990s and also her mom probably watched his films! Along these lines I decided Madonna would be a shared favorite of theirs because at one time she was like, the most famous woman in the world for her music, you know? Trish absolutely grew up listening to Madonna and I will fight everyone behind a Denny's over this belief.
Speaking of music, oh boy. Okay. So my one singular quibble with Purple Haze Feedback is that the author retconned Trish as a popstar. I LIKE THIS CONCEPT A WHOLE FUCKING LOT ON ITS OWN. I do not like that somehow, someone who was famous, who performed with her mother on stage, somehow escaped...being on the news? WHEN, NOT ONLY DID HER MOM FUCKING DIE, BUT SHE HERSELF FUCKIN, DISAPPEARED FOR OVER TWO MONTHS! I guess you could handwave she vanished from the public eye when her mom's illness got serious, and would have been given space to grieve over her eventual death. However. there is no other reference to the events around her disappearance in PHF lore, as far as I know. I think she obliquely thanks the boys on radio, which is really sweet, but I'm just disappointed there was a readymade place for her to return to that she can safely not exist in the narrative otherwise. I'm very invested in the idea of Trish being left in limbo after the events of Vento Aureo, like many characters are!, because she is not actually given time to mourn her mom or do anything before she's whisked away by Pericolo. And Vento Aureo is essentially a tragic backstory for her! Where is the self-actualization when it was like, oops, she already had that off-screen! I SAY NUTS TO THAT. Why wouldn't I play off the idea of Trish admiring people who were successful young, like Mastroianni at fourteen or Madonna at, well twenty-one professionally but she did a lot before that! Trish becoming a pop star on her own terms, with her own two hands, to entertain thousands and make a name for herself and soar so fuckin' high over the seedy underbelly her dad lorded over is such a beautiful narrative conclusion for her and I'm, just!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I'M COOL, I'M COOL.
Like, I don't think she does it quickly, or easily. It takes hard fucking work and I headcanon her mom had friends in the entertainment world, you know, as a fashion designer. She wasn't a big name, and neither are most of her friends, but they all knew Trish, and I like to think they were wondering what happened to Dona's little girl after she died...and Trish is like, listen. I need a Favor. And it spirals into many favors and hanging out with old ladies who know all her embarrassing baby stories and they're like Oh shit, this little lady is genuinely talented! And it keeps building and they make it a mission to help her where they can because I'm emo over the idea of a person's friends being their family, and these ladies loved Donatella and can't adopt Trish or anything but they can absolutely shove her in front of all the connections they have and go LOOK AT THIS GIRL! LOOK!!!!
I'm thinking they didn't check in simply because Donatella had only recently moved to Calabria and was very sad to do so, but she was moving closer to her new contract job or something. Very exciting! She ends up in the hospital! Nothing is good, actually!
This part is a little shaky, because I haven't delved too deep into the How of Trish's road to being a popstar (also because I waffle when they actually move to Calabria), but I like to think she has a long ass career, not necessarily as a popstar because that's fickle, but she gets to be internationally famous, and appears in Italian and English media long after her limelight time is over. You know, like how people like Jesse McCartney show up as voice actors and guest stars and shit? Me slamming my hands on the table and shouting IMAGINE TRISH DOING DUMB PROJECTS FOR FUN AND MAKING SOMEONE'S DAY WHEN SHE COMPOSED A THEME SONG FOR THEIR FAVORITE SHOW OR VOICED A CHARACTER IN AN ICONIC DUB. SOMEONE WHO GREW UP WITH HER TUNES ESPECIALLY!!! C'MON!!! IT'S FUCKIN CUTE!!!
But okay, back to music. I talked about Trish's taste, but where does her singing come in? I think she liked singing from a young age. Disney was on its bullshit so there's musicals to sing along to, her mom probably picked her up and danced around the house singing some Madonna, it was just...omnipresent. I'm not sure if she would have taken lessons...I imagine Trish is very self-driven, and hates people telling her what to do, so she consumes the hell out of books when theory is needed to expand her vocab, and otherwise she takes apart music bit by bit, turning it to sheet music and seeing if her notes are right by laying something back and singing along to suss out notes that way. Because playing by ear is a legit way to start out, even if it's incomplete! God, and then the Internet hits and people can share their creations and let me tell you, a person improves fast with wider exposure and peers to compete against. Trish would take to tech like a duck to water, voraciously downloading stuff off Napster and the like. MP3s are life changing!!!!
As for instruments, I picture her having to take lessons here. She gravitates to guitars because hella stylish points, and I like to think she learns acoustic, electric, and bass. Donatella is happy to pay for this stuff but she definitely doesn't get anything fancy LOL...and definitely not all at once. I place Trish getting a bass closer to before Vento Aureo, and it is so fuckin' cute that her Eyes of Heaven theme is awash in slap bass that I'm like you know what, That's Trish. She does That!
This, as well as her skirt design, feeds into how I picture her room also, but: imagine if you will, a room with the walls absolutely plastered with vinyl record covers. Maybe even one that is nothing BUT vinyl record covers set side-by-side. Isn't that sick? I think it's sick.
I think she has an eclectic collection too, amassed over time. At first I think a lot of it would be borrowed from her mom and be very Italian and very 80s, but then she gets shit like Nujabes because I think she'd like experimental and instrumental stuff honestly? Like pop informed her tastes but when it comes to treading new ground, she knows where to look! It's also the situation where an artist makes cute art but then their favorites tab is cute things and spindly wolves getting pilloried by the hands of god rendered lovingly in charcoal.
I think she'd have an immense bias for female musicians in particular though...female professionals of any kind, really. It's hard for women to Make It, and Trish is aware of this because she'd notice real fast that history has a glut of famous dudes but ladies? HM.
Otherwise, as far as the rest of her room goes! It's pretty sparse. Maybe some plants, stuffed animals of weird technicolor palettes, a small bookshelf, a desk for her to do homework and workshop music at, and a really cute bedspread that goes from animals to simpler designs as she gets older. Her guitars are pink, black, and green btw. She WILL match with everything.
She has so many fashion magazines, a purse hanging on the door handle, makeup for days littering her washroom...the only place that's an organized disaster in her meticulously kept space.
As for life outside her room and interests, I feel like Trish and school didn't vibe. She's very smart and probably got bored, as kids who need more engaged schooling get when they're a little ahead of their peers. SHE PROBABLY CAME OFF AS A SNOB TBH. VERY OUTSPOKEN AND QUICK TO BITE BACK....I absolutely do not believe she got bullied but she definitely didn't get along with everyone LOL. I don't think she'd like stuff like orchestra and the like either? She always enjoyed the idea of bands imo because a smaller group of people is easier to wrangle, and watching conductors in school try to wrangle 30 kids to play together sounded painful to her LMAOOO. I think she liked quieter hobbies besides music too, so she could come off as boring? Reading and writing were her strengths along with math, science class was okay but she is infamous for making a scene about dissecting gross dead animals!!! THEY SMELL WEIRD!!!!!!!!!!
She was again, very smart but not a very good student, alas.
Also I guess if this is in Lacco Ameno, it's a small town so maybe there wasn't a lot it could offer? So Trish just turned into a homebody as a result, although she and her mom would go to the beach often with plenty of sunscreen otherwise they'd both burn to a crisp.
Trish would just...be very choosy with how she'd spend her time imo, and people who are good at things tend to ah, spend MANY hours doing those things, so Trish becoming a popstar sort of necessitates a Trish who lived and breathed music and aside from her mom? She ain't got time for other kids and their bullshit.
LIKE. I THINK SHE LOVED PLAYING PRETEND AS A WEE ONE BUT ROUGH HOUSING? NAH? That's how you get dirty and gross!!!
I don't disbelieve she had friends since she's capable of socializing far better than the feral boys she had to hang out with, probably, but I think she doesn't keep up with the friends she'd made as youngster after the move to Calabria, since distance is a bitch even with internet, and then her mom gets horribly sick and her entire life gets turned upside down really quickly after that, so her social life in Calabria, if it existed at all, was quickly snuffed out.
I enjoy constructing and contrasting her dry, focused, more persnickety personality with her mom because I like to think Donatella was vivacious and liked to get involved but was perhaps easily distracted. Mostly though, I do this as a nod to the other half of her gene pool, who is hell in a handbasket in every way but Diavolo seems very Serious and I think Trish has shades of that in her to go with the shade of her hair, LMAO. Also it's amazingly stupid that the wiki says TRISH INHERITED HER DISTASTE FOR FOOLISH STINKY MEN, INSECTS, AND THINGS THAT AREN'T BEAUTIFUL FROM HER MOM??? THAT WAS WORD FOR WORD OFF HER OWN CHARACTER PROFILE!!!!! I think a better word would be she adopted these preferences if we're going by the anime, which I am, but they are mutable for sure, as seen with Mista. The bug thing is so common as well it's almost nothing, so while I have her freaking out at bugs, do you know how often that comes up in threads? ALMOST NEVER! IT'S THE WORLD'S MOST SITUATIONAL "PERSONALITY TRAIT"!!!! HURGH!!!
That's all I have for now. There is no coherence because my thoughts are like a million pinballs and im trying to wrangle them with a baseball cap.
